Defy TV landed on WKRN 2.3

- Posted December 2nd, 2024 at 10:33am
Recently, ION ended the over-the-air feed of Scripps News on WNPX 28.6 on November 15th. They put ION Mystery in its place. That network also airs on WKRN 2.2. WKRN announced they were adding the DefyTV network beginning Dec. 1st. So, what was logically to believe was that WKRN will replace ION Mystery with Defy network. Well, Dec. 1st rolled around and they put Defy on 2.3 instead. They took off the True Crime network and placed Defy there all the while leaving ION Mystery on 2.2. That was interesting. Also, as far as I know right now, or last time I checked, Defy was still on WKUW-LD channel 40.2. So, please comment below to tell me what you all think about this. Until more news breaks, that's all for now.

From what I'm thinking. They might replace it with a different channel or just keep it. I was told that the contract with Ion Mystery was ending but they must have changed their mind after I contacted them about Defy TV.

True Crime Network is on air in Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga and Huntsville, AL. I bet another Nashville OTA will pick that up. The only reason WKRN might have kept ION Mystery is because WUXP is so far away for those of us outside of the Nashville area. But this could all change again. Time will tell.

Did you mean to say WNPX? If you did I understand what you're saying. It is farther away from the southern portion of Nashville to cover the Bowling Green, KY market. I'm surprised they didn't just keep WNPX in Nashville and establish a low powered station in Bowling Green to save money and cover two areas at once without moving towers.

I did. Ooops. I wish they had moved their main signal closer to Nashville, then had a LP in or near Bowling Green, KY. I have Frndly because I can’t get any of those channels, unless I have the chance to watch from Huntsville, AL.

When WNPX was full power from Nashville, I believe similar location to WTVF and WUXP, I had more dependable coverage at my home just north of Bowling Green near Smiths Grove. These days WNPX at the site north of White House, TN, is marginal most days. Oddly enough, we now have WNKY-LD (35) airing Ion 35.1, IonPlus 35.2, Laff 35.3 and MeToons 35.4. It's owned by Marquee who also owns WNKY-DT 40 (RF24). Both broadcast from Smiths Grove, KY.

I forgot that WNKY-LD already had Ion, Ion Plus, Laff, and MeTV Toons on it. So that covers Bowling Green.

Well I don't really know why WNPX moved to another tower and lowered its power just for WNKY-LD to have Ion, Ion Plus, and Laff. 3 of 9 channels they carry.

The reason they moved is because they had to. The ones that owned Ion stations, before Scripps bought them, lost their lease and had a fallout with the American Towers company, who owns the tower in Nashville. The only tower not owned by them and one that best fit their needs was the one near White House and Cross Plains. Because it was more north of Nashville, that put them closer to WDRB's broadcast range up in Louisville where they broadcast on the same RF channel of 32. So they had to reduce their power some from 733kw down to 550kw. Just FYI by the way. 😁

That makes more sense now. I didn't put the pieces together. Thank you for telling me. It's easier to get WNPX because I'm so close to it. Just being 50 miles away makes it easier to pick it up.

Now that Scripps owns WNPX, one would think they would attempt a move to the co-owned WTVF broadcast tower and seek a power increase (to the previous 733kw) for better coverage in the southern areas of Nashville.

Yeah, not long after WNPX moved to that tower, I emailed the WTVF engineer to ask the same thing. He said that would be a good idea, but he hadn't heard anything.

I had no idea. But I too wrote WTVF about the same. They said "no plans to move".

This was the same when WJFB was in Lebanon. It was *closer* to me. But I rarely got it. Then they moved to the tower farm near White House, and now it's near constant signal.
