Bowling Green: WCZU Power Temporarily Lowered

- Posted August 2nd, 2023 at 12:38am
For the past two weeks, WCZU 39 (RF 19) has been running on less power than usual. The following will explain.

"The Station’s transmitter’s ERP has been reduced to 6.1kW as the Licensee is in the process of repairing damaged pallets in the transmitter. Once the transmitter is repaired and the transmitter can be operated safely, the station will be able to resume licensed operations."

Once I find out it has resumed license operations, I will post about it. Until more news breaks, that's all for now.

I have seen on my antenna that on WKRN channel 2.3 that is usually the True Crime Network has shown AW for the channel name and is bringing in no video data. I just want to make sure that it is not an issue on my end. EDIT: never mind it was my HDHomerun tuning the channel so it's alright.

You know that 2.3 AW has nothing to do with WKRN. It is actually WKUW-LD 40. When the power went out at the tower, guessing, and they went off the air, the equipment went back to 2.3 AW, which I guess is its backup setup. WCTZ 35 does the same thing. It may have done it as well. I just can't receive WCTZ 35 to see if it did.

WCTZ 35 did the same thing. I received it for a short time and it reverted back to its settings. Right now for WKRN 2.3 it says "Test Signal On."

Right now I have 28.3 as AW, so that's WKUD, and I have 35.3 as AW so that's WCTZ.

WKUW-LD and WCTZ are both back on the air.

Any idea what happened to WZTV RF 20 (Fox 17)? I have lost it since July 31st. I had to re-add it via the 3.0 signal til they fix the 1.0 transmitter.

WUXP and WZTV are back online. WNAB is still offline.

Just let everybody know in the Bowling Green area, that Chris Allen who used to be at WBKO 13, is now on wnky 40, Monday through Friday at 5:00 6:00 and 10:00, he left channel 13 and went to the Sam FM in Bowling Green morning slot, and on there still on, I want to let everybody that was a Fan of his know, good to see him back, he was the better weatherman ever in Bowling Green, in my opinion LOL

I’ll put this here since it’s for the Bowling Green, KY market. WNKY-LD Channel 35 appears to be up to full power now, although it’s still not a quality signal for me less than 10 air miles from the tower. It is no longer simulcasting WNKY Channel 40. 35.1 is Ion (1080i), 35.2 is Defy TV (480i and shows ID at top of the hour as WPGA 58.2 Perry/Macon GA). 35.3 is Laff (480i). I haven’t seen a legal ID yet for 35.1 or 35.3. This is not a win at our house as we already get these stations perfectly fine from WNPX 28 and the signal is more stable for 28. In fact, Ion is available to stream via several apps. We will continue to watch Defy and Laff via WNPX.

I was actually able to catch a Legal ID on WNKY-LD for Ion 35.1. It shows WPGA 58.1 Perry/Macon and Laff 35.3 shows WPGA 58.3 Perry/Macon. So this appears to be a simulcast of WPGA TV 58 in the Macon, Georgia market. A quick search of Rabbit Ears Info, however, shows WPGA-TV 58 is a full power station that is ME TV affiliate and is not quite a simulcast of WNKY-LD as they have Ion on WPGA 58.3 and does not appear to broadcast Defy or Laff. Rabbit Ears Info could be dated for this WPGA. Very strange though. What is even more strange is WNKY-LD is owned by Marquee Broadcasting who does not own WPGA. It’s actually owned by WBKO’s parent company, Gray Television. Even stranger, my antenna pointed straight at WNKY 40’s tower in Smiths Grove, which is where WNKY-LD is located per FCC, I get no signal for 35.1 WNKY-LD. It doesn’t register a blip of signal. However, if I point my antenna about 90 degrees West toward Bowling Green and WBKO’s tower, I can lock in about 50% for WNKY-LD (or is it WPGA, who knows). Maybe someone on here has an idea as to what is going on.

Sounds like they are testing the signal on the original tower that WNKY-LD was going to be on in the first place. That or it is at such a low power that you have to aim it at a different direction justo receive it.

The original tower site for WNKY-LD is actually an old AT&T microwave tower which is North of Brownsville in central Edmonson county. The special temporary authority (STA) to get it on air was actually a mile or so away from the ATT microwave site at Jacob’s Furniture. There appeared to be a temp antenna on their roof. As a temporary plan to get it on the air before the CP expired, I would guess is why they were simulcasting WNKY NBC/CBS/METV using an STA. I have not been by there lately to know if that antenna is still there or not. However, using a simulcast of a Macon Georgia station would be more difficult to pull of at an STA site. The FCC no longer lists the STA and shows it is on air full time at the Smiths Grove site. However, I will be surprised if that is really the case based on my first hand experience.

I really don't know what to say then. I just had a good guess.

Thank you for all that info and for being very thorough. I will try and investigate this more in depth. Please keep me updated.

It's not uncommon for stations to re-use the AT&T Microwave (Long Line) towers. W14EE does in Algood. On Brotherton Mountain Road.

Xmguy, after months of testing W14EE I have figured out that I can get it inside but it is low. Outside I haven't tried on an HDHomerun but I have tried on a small antenna but I have it in one spot in my yard where it is a no go for reception. Putting an antenna outside would be in the way of cars coming into my yard and that's a hazard.

I put mine on a Dish Network pole. It's not perfect. But most of the time it's solid. I had to aim off where I thought the signal was coming from. Like more east.

I seen your pictures on avsforum. I'm glad you found a spot for W14EE. Do you still receive it at 80 quality or was that because of the weather?
